Swimming over to Sophia I put my arm around her and say, “You know sometimes what is bothering us most is best just said so it is out in the open.”
“You have no idea big brother exactly what you are asking me to tell you” she says with a dead look in her eyes.
“Tell me” I tell her, “I am a grown man now after all what could you say that I cannot handle or deal with?”
“You really have no clue” Sophia says and then she looks at me and says, “Did you know I have been sleeping with dad for two years now?”
I stand there in stunned silence.
“See, told you” she says as if she is all knowing.
“I hate to tell you this little sister, but you need to let mom know and give us all the details.”
“Like Hell mom will kill me and now you are ashamed of me.”
“I am not ashamed of you, I cannot judge why you did what you did, but the truth of it needs to be out there or you will never be able to move forward from this point and time and we deserve to know everything since it has had a major effect on us and our lives too.”
“Okay then, it needs to be said” she says her shoulders slumping, her eyes looking at the ground as we start for our shelter.
I take her hand as we walk.
