It isn't very far down the path that she notices something moving- shadows up ahead. She quickly ducks behind a tree, and her eyes scan the area, trying to place where they are. She was hoping she wouldn't have to fight so soon, but at least she has her choice of weapons. She could use her sword, but the sound of unsheathing it might alert the beings to her location.
She could use her staff, but it isn't nearly as effective- nor is she as skilled with it.
Or, she could simply step out and play the damsel in distress.
