"I'll sit in the back," you say and slip in next to Katherine. Rebecca gives you a smile as you climb past her but you think you catch a flash of annoyance on her face.
The back seat is quite cramped. Katherine smilse at you and holds your hand squeezing it gently. "I'm so excited. I haven't been to a proper dance for ages." Katherine's friend Carla, now sitting in the front agrees and the two chatter excitedly about the evening ahead. Rebecca starts up the engine and pulls out onto the road.
The journey only takes ten minutes but all the way you are conscious of Kat's thigh pressing against yours. You feel a bit hot and overdressed in your Tuxedo and are surprised when Kat leans next to you and whispers in your ear, "You look so handsome tonight". She kisses you lightly on the cheek and you feel yourself blush. Glancing up your eyes meet Rebecca's watching you in the rearview mirror.
"Look's like it's going to be a hot night," says Rebecca before looking away and pulling up in front of the school hall. "It might be hotter than some of us expect." Before anyone can ask her what she means she climbs out the car.
The three of you walk into the hall, Kat holding your arm. The hall is filling up rapidly and the band have started to play. You all stroll over to where drinks are being served and grab some fruitcup. As Carla and Katherine are being served Rebecca takes hold of your elbow. She whispers urgently in your ear. "Katherine's such a loser. I don't understand why you asked her to the dance! I'd have been your date if you'd asked me."
You see Kat turning back to you smiling.
