"Hey, Jenna." I said it in the same mock-greeting as 'hello, Newman' on Seinfeld.
She rolled her eyes. "Yeah, 'hey'. Look, my car, the very expensive Rolls-Royce you've always been jealous of had to be taken in for maintenece, so I need a ride." She opened the passenger-side door.
"Woah, woah, woah! Your car went into the shop while you were here?"
"Yeah, one of my daddy's servants came and got it!" She scoffed, like she expected me to know her life story.
"That's real nifty about your dad havng servants and all, but I never agreed to give you a ride."
She sighed. "Look, if I give you ten bucks, will you just get in and we can go? It's not like I live far away or anything."
I stood there for a moment. I hated the very idea of helping someone like her, but I could use that $10. Besides, i'd been to her side of town before, and it was only ten minutes away. A dollar a minute was a pretty good wage....
"..Fine." I got in and started toward the other side of town.
During the drive, I concentrated on the road and she kept her eyes locked on the window. Well, i did sneak a look at her legs once or twice. But silence in the car has always bothered me, so I steeled myself and spoke up.
"I thought cheerleader practice was going on after school today." I tried to supress the 'why are you bugging me' tone, but some got through.
"They cancelled it because one of those lard-asses broke her arm and another has the flu or something. So now i'm stuck in my uniform, not practicing. OK?"
"Alright, i'm just trying to be nice. Don't get all pissed."
She sighed, but not in the same irritated way as before. "Look, i'm not mad at you, it's just that I just found out Brad fucked some other little bitch, and it's pissing me off."
"I'm sorry," I lied. If I were Brad, i'd probably cheat on her too. Hell, i'd have had the sense not to date her.
"...Thanks." She hesitated. "I wish I could get back at him somehow." |
