You stand there for what seems like forever, watching as he taps his pen over and over on the screen, occasionally tutting as if unhappy with whatever he is seeing, until finally he throws the pen down on the desk, and you both watch as it rolls across the surface and over the edge, falling onto the floor on your side of the desk.
“Bugger” he says, but the tone of his voice instantly relaxes you as it is said with a grin as he looks towards you for the first time since you entered the room.
“Well Danielle, glad you could join us, and I hope this year is as pleasurable for you as I am sure it will be for all the people lucky enough to be working with you.” That wasn’t the sort of opening line you was expecting, but in your nervous state you don’t pay too much attention, and simply utter a small thank you.
“Now come on, why don’t you relax, you look scared half to death” he continues, “Take a seat girl” he adds, pointing to the comfortable looking chair by his desk.
“Thank you” you say again, this time with a little less nerves as his manner helps you relax, “I am just so nervous, this being my first proper job and all that” you tell him as you cross the room to the offered chair.
You step carefully as you are about to take your seat, trying not to step on the pen that is still sitting on the floor in front of you.
