You are Mentat. When you were 22 and in college, you signed up for a study on the effects of mild electrical currents being imparted into the brain. An accident in the lab (isn't it always that way?) caused WAY too much electricity to be injected into your brain, and you nearly died. However, when you woke up, you noticed that you could get an impression of the things the people around you were thinking. You started to work with this new ability as you went through therapy from your accident in the lab, and one day, as you were listening in on someone's mind, you accidentally implanted a suggestion into their head, and the person did what you asked, and then seemed to not remember it afterwards.
You continued to exercise this new ability. You can now make people ignore you when you are with them, such that they don't even think you are in the room or nearby. You can still read minds, but much better than you did before, and at longer ranges. And your last experiments with your suggestions powers have honed them to a fine point.
Oh, and your therapy is over. You decide that your powers are going to be your ticket to checking the squares on your Christmas list: money, power, notoriety, maybe even a hot chick or two or three as well.
