Julie didn't pay attention to who else was on the elevator. As soon as the doors closed someone pressed a cloth to her face and she passed out.
She woke up on wooden bench in a cell. The cell had exposed brick walls on two sides, steel bars on two others, and a cement floor and ceiling.
There was a bucket of water by a drain in her cell. Next to it was a stool.
On the stool, there was a pink ladies' razor, a can of shaving cream, and a sign: "Shave yourself to show you're ready to enter Society."
