At nine o'clock, Miss Stoller comes by to ensure that all the boys are secure in their rooms. You make certain that you present an appearance of someone all set to go to bed, and so are wearing your school-issued pyjamas and reading the school-issued Bible when she comes by.
"I don't want to hear a peep out of you tonight," Miss Stoller orders, shaking a finger.
"Not a sound, Ma'am," you agree like a good little boy. "Except I do tend to snore."
She sneers at what she interprets as a feeble joke, then closes your door firmly and continues down the hall.
Immediately, you change back into regular clothes and begin stuffing your pyjamas into the shape of a sleeping person on your bed. Your portable DVD player is loaded with an mp3 disc that will play snoring sounds for up to twelve hours (you came to school prepared!). You also fill a pair of hip flasks from the bottle of Jack Daniels in your mattress. In less than thirty minutes, you're all set to go out.
Carefully you open the door, noticing that Miss Stoller has sprinkled flour just outside it, presumably to provide evidence if you should try to go out. Amateur. You reach up and grab the rafter just above your door and swing over the top of the flour, then tiptoe down the hall in your socks to the stairs. Once you arrive at the second floor, you make your way carefully through the girls' restroom (unoccupied) and through a window to make your escape. It's a bit of a drop to the ground, but the building is made of stone so you're able to rock-climb your way down without much trouble.
Keeping to the shadows as much as possible, you make your way across the Quad to the clock tower. |
