Johnny's Conscience | deathofcards | 2

Kyle and Wade pull out their guns as well. Seeing the three of us all with guns pointed at him makes the driver think twice about his actions. He starts to get nervous. Still holding his gun in one hand, he puts both of them back up into the air, signaling again that he doesn’t want any trouble. I keep my aim on him, just in case it is all a ruse and he's about to try something.

“Put the gun down,” I tell him. He quickly tosses it onto the ground.

He looks exceptionally nervous, which is understandable seeing as he has three guns pointed at him. “Just take the money. I don’t want any trouble,” he tells us.

“Give me the keys,” I reply. He reaches into one of his pockets and retrieves a set of keys and throws them to me, I catch them in one hand, not dropping my aim from him for a second.

He looks at me as if he wants something. “The thing is, if it looks like I just willingly gave you the keys and let you take all the money, I’m going to get fired. I can’t lose my job, I’ve got a wife and two kids to feed."

“What are you saying? That out of the kindness of our hearts you want us to put away our guns and go home?” Kyle asks sarcastically.

“No it’s not that. I need you take make it look like I put up a struggle,” he tells us.

“I think I can see we’re this is going. You want us to rough you up a little,” I point out.

“Yeah. Just don’t hit me too hard,” he replies pleadingly.

“Sure anything you say,” Kyle sneers.

“Man this is fucked up.” Wade comments. I laugh a little at Wade’s comment. I guess that Kyle would be quite willing to undertake the driver’s request. Kyle steps closer to the driver and bunches up one hand into a fist. The driver seems to be trying to ready himself for Kyle’s initial blow; all I could see was that he's unlucky. When Kyle isn’t doing jobs for the boss, there's nothing he liked more than boxing. I have seen Kyle knock out guys with one punch before, and he is a bloodthirsty bastard. Kyle could have turned pro, but he fucked up what was meant to be a fixed fight some years ago and has been trying to pay off his debts to our employer ever since.

Kyle swings his fist into the driver’s stomach and I watch the guy double over in pain, clutching his chest. Kyle’s blow had knocked the air out of the guy. If it had been me, I would have left it there, but I knew Kyle was going to properly mess this guy up. I’d interject, but I really didn’t want to piss Kyle off. I walk over to Wade, who's standing there watching the driver intently. Out of the corner of my eye, I see Kyle kick the driver squarely in the chest, I’m sure I heard a dull crack as Kyle broke one of his ribs.

“We should get the money out of the truck,” I tell Wade. The two of us head around to the back of truck and I unlock the door. Wade takes one side and I take the other, working in unison we shove the door upwards. It's an old truck, so the door only went up about half way, just enough for us to get in easily. Inside are several small unmarked gray bags. I walk over and open one. The bag contains about a hundred thousand dollars in bound stacks of tens. There are five bags in total, I grab three and Wade takes the others.

We jump back out of the truck, and the two of us make our way back to the car. Wade opens the truck and we put the money inside. I leave Wade at the car and head back over to Kyle. I watch him kick the driver in the legs and the stomach again. The driver splutters and coughs up some blood. Kyle proceeds to bring his foot down heavily on his face, and I hear his nose crack as blood starts to stream out of it.

Kyle lights a cigarette and crouched over the driver. “Now you can claim workman’s comp as well as keeping your job,” Kyle jokes. Despite the viciousness of situation, I find it slightly amusing.

“We’re done,” I said, throwing the keys back at the driver. Kyle and I head back into the car, where Wade is sitting in the driver’s seat. Our job done, I wonder what we should do now. I suggest going back to the strip club and letting off some steam, Wade just wants to go somewhere and chill for a bit, and Kyle's keen to dropping off the money as soon as possible.

Where do they go next?

          Another job.
