She screamed as she looked into its shiny black eyes once more as it chuckled. Mina twisted away, and scrambled up the ladder again. She would rather take her chances up there than with that thing. It didn't follow her, but its chuckle turned into a deep laugh and it unscrewed the hatch to the Pit.
Mina scrambled up onto the deck just as she saw the crewmen unload on the inmates with short range shotgun blasts, but it was too late. She turned away from the scene and ran to the side of the ship, tears welling up in her eyes. She stopped, and gasped as she saw the lighthouse. "How the hell are we at the asylum already?" she thought. She heard the hatch being turned behind her, and she panicked. Her eyes darted back and forth until she saw the rope ladder.
She dashed over to it, and tossed it over the side. The asylum's lights were hazy through the fog, but she could see them up the rocky path from the jagged shore. She scrambled over the side just as the inmates from the Pit started pouring out onto the deck. Her mind raced as she climbed down the tall side of the ship, praying that none of them had seen her go over the side.
As soon as her bare foot touched the ground, she turned and ran up the rocky path. She glanced over her shoulder, and saw the...thing....staring at her from the deck. She kept running, her heart pounding. "Have to get inside! Have to get inside!" she repeated over and over.
She could hear them struggling down the rope ladder, but she had good lead on them. She made it to the gates and ran through up the cobblestone pathway leading to the massive asylum. "Donovan Sanitarium" glared from salt-blasted walls in huge iron letters. She ran to massive wooden doors, and beat on them, screaming "Let me in! Let me in! Oh God!" She pounded the buzzer, and sobbed as she waited.
The sound of the key being turned finally sounded, and she pushed her way in. A glance over her shoulder revealed that they had not caught up to her yet. "They are loose! The inmates! They are..." she said, burying her face in the gaurd's chest. He closed the door, and yelled "Nurse!" as she fainted once more. |
