The day had arrived at last, and Emma and her friends were checking in for their flight to Santolina. When they received their boarding passes, they realized to their disappointment they were all seated individually, dispersed throughout the plane. Emma took her seat next to a pretty young woman, reading a book. They struck up a conversation. Unlike Emma and her friends, the young woman was not on vacation; she introduced herself as Heather MacEwen, a nursing student from Scotland off to complete a internship on tropical diseases.
